Osakabe-hime

Osakabe-hime 刑部姫
Osakabe-hime (刑部姫), the “Lady of the Walls,” is the divine and reclusive mistress of Himeji Castle—a powerful spirit who rules the fortress from its highest tower and guards its fortunes with ancient magic.
Meaning and Origin
The name means “Lady of the Great Wall” or “Princess of the Keep.”
Her origin is tied to the sacred geography of Mount Hime, the site where the world-famous Himeji Castle was built. She is widely believed to be the Osakabe-gami, the local mountain deity who was displaced when the castle walls were first raised. To appease her, the castle lords built a hidden shrine in the uppermost keep (Tenshu), officially making her the supernatural protector of the fortress.
Characteristics
Osakabe-hime is a high-ranking and sophisticated yokai. She is typically depicted as a noblewoman in her 30s or a majestic elderly grandmother, always wearing the traditional 12-layered silk kimono (jūnihitoe) of the Heian court. She is often seen surrounded by bat familiars, which act as her eyes and ears throughout the castle grounds.
She possesses immense spiritual power: she can read hearts, manipulate the minds of those inside her castle, and control a small army of animal spirits. She is notoriously reclusive and hates human contact; legend says that any person who sees her true face without her permission will die instantly.
Legends
Despite her reclusive nature, Osakabe-hime is a loyal guardian. Once a year, she is said to meet with the current lord of Himeji Castle in a secret ceremony to reveal the fortress’s fate for the coming year. If the lord is just and honorable, she ensures the castle remains un-burnt and un-conquered.
One famous legend involves the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. While serving at Himeji Castle, Musashi was tasked with purging a “monster” from the top floors. Instead of a beast, he encountered Osakabe-hime in her majestic form. Impressed by his courage and his lack of fear, she didn’t attack. Instead, she recognized him as a master of his craft and presented him with a legendary sword, proving that to the “Lady of the Walls,” a warrior’s heart is worth more than their pedigree.
