Tengu

Tengu 天狗
Tengu (天狗), the “Heavenly Dogs,” are the powerful bird-like protectors of Japan’s mountain peaks—master swordsmen and spiritual guardians who exist between the worlds of men, gods, and demons.
Meaning and Origin
The name literally means “Heavenly Dog” (ten - heaven, gu - dog), a translation of the Chinese meteor-spirit Tiangou.
However, in Japan, they evolved from being ominous dogs into avian mountain spirits. Their origins are tied to Shugendō, the mountain-ascetic worship of Japan. Tengu are said to be the spirits of arrogant priests or fallen monks who were too proud to reach enlightenment. Because of their vanity, they were reborn as these powerful, winged entities that dwell in the deep forests of Mount Kurama and Mount Takao.
Characteristics
Tengu are divided into two primary forms. The Karasu Tengu (Crow Tengu) is more bird-like, with a beak and wings. The more powerful Daitengu (Great Tengu) has a more human form but with bright red skin and an impossibly long nose—a physical symbol of his immense pride.
They wear the tattered robes and pillbox hats of Yamabushi (mountain hermits) and carry a magical feather fan (hauchiwa) that can stir up hurricane-force winds. Tengu are world-renowned in folklore for their martial arts prowess; they are the ultimate masters of the sword and the spear, possessing supernatural strength and the ability to fly.
Legends
The most famous Tengu legend involves the child-warrior Ushiwaka-maru (the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune). While living in exile at Kurama Temple, the boy was taken deep into the woods by Sōjōbō, the King of the Tengu.
The ancient spirit spent years teaching the boy the “Tengu’s Way” of the sword—techniques too fast and too precise for any human master to match. Thanks to this supernatural training, Yoshitsune went on to become one of the greatest military geniuses in Japanese history. This legend cemented the Tengu’s role as the “Divine Trainers,” showing that while they can be arrogant and dangerous, they are also the keepers of Japan’s most sacred and powerful martial traditions.
